Possible Locations for a New
Summer Campground in the
Laguna & Cuyamaca Mountains
Site Selection, March 3, 2020
Executive Summary
In March of 2020, San Diego County retained Angel McVay, to assess possible locations for a summer campground in the Laguna and Cuyamaca Mountains. The objectives of this summary are to provide an overview of the findings and to present recommendations for site selection to the County.
As per the county’s request, a site was selected that meets the following criteria:
Elevation equal to or greater than 4,000 feet above sea level.
Terrain slope is relatively flat (slope of less than 5 degrees is ideal)
Vegetation cover of one of the following types: coniferous forest, oak woodlands, or mixed forests.
Two maps are attached to this executive summary showing the findings of this analysis. The first map, Elevation Map of Laguna and Cuyamaca Mountains, is a simple map showing the slope in degrees and the elevation in feet above sea level and can be used in comparison to the second map in order to clearly see the topography of the selected area. The second map, Possible Locations for a Summer Campground, shows possible locations that have been given a score from 0-10 with 10 being the most ideal to show how closely they meet the aforementioned criteria. For the purposes of simplicity, only the top 3 classifications have been included in green, blue, pink. Based on these results, it is my recommendation that the best area for a summer campground is in the Mt. Laguna area because it has the largest area and good access to a major road. To the northwest of Mt. Laguna is another 3 peaks that may be good locations for a campground, although an access road may need to be constructed to access the campground.
